Sarasota is a city located in Sarasota County on the southwestern coast of the U.S. state of Florida. The area is renowned for its cultural and environmental amenities, beaches, resorts, and the Sarasota School of Architecture. The city is at the southern end of the Tampa Bay Area, north of Fort Myers and Punta Gorda.
 
It's official limits include Sarasota Bay and several barrier islands between the bay and the Gulf of Mexico. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, in 2013 Sarasota had a population of 53,326. In 1986 it became designated as a certified local government. Sarasota is a principal city of the Sarasota metropolitan area, and is the seat of Sarasota County.

The islands separating Sarasota Bay from the gulf near the city, known as keys, include Lido Key and Siesta Key, which are famous worldwide for the quality of their sandy beaches. The keys that are included in the city limits are Lido Key, Longboat Key, St. Armands Key, and Siesta Key. Nearby off the coast of Sarasota is Bird Key, City Island, and the smaller keys of Oyster Bay and Monkey Island.
 
The city is home to several professional arts organizations including the Sarasota Opera, the Sarasota Ballet of Florida, the Florida Studio Theatre, the Asolo Repertory Theatre, and the Westcoast Black Theatre Troupe. The John and Mable Ringling Museum of Art, one of the largest museums in the United States, is located in the city. The Ringling's Ca' d'Zan mansion is also on the National Register of Historic Places.
 
The city is governed by a mayor and city council. The current mayor is Shannon Snyder. The city manager is Tom Barwin.
 
The city has a Mediterranean climate bordering on a subtropical climate, with hot, humid summers and warm, dry winters. There is a distinct rainy season from June to September, when air mass thunderstorms from the Gulf of Mexico are common. These storms often bring heavy rainfall and strong winds.
 
Sarasota is a renowned haven for retirees and has been a popular destination for snowbirds since the early 20th century. In recent years, however, the city has seen an influx of young professionals and families. The city has also become a popular tourist destination, with visitors coming from all over the world to enjoy its beaches, arts, culture, and cuisine.
